Who is Paul Black?
Like many other gardeners, one of Paulís Grandmothers played a big role in his love of plants and in particular, irises. She could never have imagined the contributions he would make to the iris world and the influence she would have in his life. His quest to find irises to plant at his first home led him to one of the local iris societies in Oklahoma City and a gateway to a passion that has lasted a lifetime. These genial people became his friends and mentors.
In no time at all, Paul had established his commercial iris garden, Mid-America Garden, in Oklahoma City. After encountering many growing problems in Oklahoma, however, the garden was moved to Salem, Oregon, in 1998. Although now in retirement, Paul continues to hybridize irises to market through Mid-America Garden and other commercial growers, such as Schreiner's Iris Gardens. Breeding irises is still a powerful driving force for Paul. His irises have been voted more top American Iris Society awards than any other hybridizerís. His irises have also won numerous international awards. His creations continue to be a significant contribution to the world of irises.
