Ninety-eight years ago, the Sasses in Nebraska introduced the first American plicatas (margin of color on a white ground). The thirty-nine inch tall bloomstalks of our Cascade Locks would come up to their chests. From that inception it would take decades to achieve such near black standards, such large flowers, impressive substance, and the clean white centers of the falls. See how the blinding white falls heighten the stark contrast with the very dark, semi-closed standards. Our photo illustrates how wisps of white plicata peek out from the standards' darkness. An undertone of rouge graces the entirety of this startling creation. Cascade Locks is named for a series of locks on a half-mile of the Columbia River where the compressed channel formerly made it the wildest and most violent stretch. Seedling # A2024-1
